Historians, economists, and archaeologists often seek a single cause for the decline of great civilizations, such as the fall of Rome or the Maya. However, this paper argues that civilizations are complex systems where decline is rarely the result of one event. Instead, it is the product of multiple, interacting pressures. A critical distinction is made between the collapse of a political or administrative system and the disappearance of a culture. When an empire 'falls,' the people, language, and traditions often persist, even as the central management, trade networks, and infrastructure deteriorate.
