Does listening to research papers improve learning?
Evidence is promising, but it depends on design. In a 2022 scoping review of 62 studies in medical education, podcasts were generally noninferior to traditional teaching methods for knowledge retention, and learners consistently valued portability and efficiency. That supports audio as a serious educational format, but not as a blanket replacement for every kind of reading.
Why do transcripts matter if the product is audio-first?
Because the evidence points toward supported multimedia, not audio in isolation. A 2017 meta-analysis found that cueing in multimedia materials reduced cognitive load and improved retention and transfer.
