Matrix multiplication is a fundamental computational task for machine learning, image processing, and neural networks. While digital electronic hardware like GPUs currently dominates this field, optics offers a path to higher speed, massive parallelism, and improved energy efficiency by leveraging the coherence and superposition properties of light. This paper presents a novel free-space optical architecture that achieves reconfigurable, large-scale, and real-valued linear algebraic operations.
The authors utilize two spatial light modulators (SLMs)—a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) and a liquid-crystal SLM (LC-SLM)—to encode input vectors and matrix elements, respectively. The system uses a coherent light source to propagate fields through these modulators, performing element-wise multiplication. Cylindrical lenses are then employed to perform a Fourier transform in the horizontal dimension, while a slit (implemented digitally in this experiment) effectively sums the rows, yielding the vector-matrix product. By adjusting the patterns on the SLMs, the system can be dynamically reconfigured for different matrices and vectors.
Experimental testing demonstrates that the setup successfully performs vector-matrix multiplication and parallel vector-vector multiplication with matrix dimensions up to 56x56. The system shows good agreement with theoretical predictions, with measured amplitude error standard deviations below 0.024 for all sizes. The authors estimate that by increasing the resolution of available off-the-shelf modulators, their design could scale to support matrix sizes of several hundred and perform over 10^5 parallel computations in a single operation. Furthermore, the estimated energy efficiency of the proposed design significantly outperforms current state-of-the-art digital processors.
This architecture offers a robust, reconfigurable platform for specialized optical processors. By overcoming previous limitations in matrix size and reconfigurability for real-valued operations, the design serves as a viable building block for high-speed optical neural networks and Ising machines, potentially enabling massive computational gains in latency-sensitive inference tasks.
Optics is a promising platform in which to help realise the next generation of fast, parallel and energy-efficient computation. We demonstrate a reconfigurable free-space optical multiplier that is capable of over 3000 computations in parallel, using spatial light modulators with a pixel resolution of only 340x340. This enables vector-matrix multiplication and parallel vector-vector multiplication with vector size of up to 56. Our design is the first to simultaneously support optical implementation of reconfigurable, large-size and real-valued linear algebraic operations. Such an optical multiplier can serve as a building block of special-purpose optical processors such as optical neural networks and optical Ising machines.
Alex: So corresponding locations carry corresponding numerical entries. But a row of separate products still isn’t the answer; those products have to be added.
Sam: A cylindrical lens brings light together along each row. At the centre of that focused pattern, the electric fields add. Selecting that central strip gives the row sums, so the output field carries the desired multiplication result.
Alex: You said electric fields, rather than intensities. Is that also where negative numbers become possible?
Sam: Yes. Phase means where a light wave sits within its oscillation. A sign reversal can be represented by reversing that phase, allowing contributions to cancel instead of only accumulate. The authors measure both the output amplitude and its phase to recover signed answers.
Alex: The conceptual device can encode signed numbers. Does the actual experiment allow negative entries everywhere?
Sam: No, and that distinction matters. The input vector uses a digital micromirror device, whose tiny mirrors switch light on or off. That makes it faster to update, but restricts those input values to nonnegative numbers.
Alex: So the negative values come from the other programmable surface. That gives signed results, but not unrestricted signed inputs.
Sam: The matrix is encoded with a liquid-crystal modulator that controls amplitude and phase through a programmed grating pattern. The authors say another liquid-crystal device could replace the micromirrors for signed, higher-precision inputs. That substitution is proposed, not demonstrated here.
Alex: What example best shows that the apparatus is doing more than multiplying a single input by a matrix?
Sam: In one example, each row holds a different pair of vectors. The apparatus multiplies corresponding entries and adds them, producing an inner product: a measure formed by summing those pairwise products. Different rows produce different inner products simultaneously.
Alex: That’s a broader test than repeating the same input down every row. It also sounds more sensitive to whether the two patterns line up.
Sam: The authors make that point explicitly. Different patterns on different rows make misalignment more consequential. They therefore use this parallel vector-pair task to characterise the system, rather than relying only on the simpler repeated-input case.
Alex: How extensive is that characterisation? A convincing image of one output would not tell us much about numerical reliability.
Sam: At each tested size, they run fifty batches of parallel vector-pair calculations. The entries are randomly selected, with nonnegative inputs on the micromirrors and signed entries on the liquid-crystal device. They compare the measured answers with the mathematically expected products.
Alex: Where does the scale top out? And is the whole illuminated pattern available for useful calculations?
Sam: The largest tested vector length is fifty-six. One row is reserved as a reference, so not every encoded row produces an independent computational answer. That reference helps establish whether each output should be interpreted as positive or negative.
Alex: For someone considering analogue hardware, the useful question is accuracy at that largest size. How close were the answers?
Sam: The error standard deviation was about two and a half percent of their normalised output scale. That is not a percentage error on every individual answer. They normalise against the maximum possible reference output, rather than each answer’s own magnitude.
Alex: That distinction especially matters for answers near zero. How large was the error relative to the spread of answers they actually tested?
Sam: At the largest size, the expected-answer distribution was about ten times wider than the error distribution. Smaller tested sizes performed better on that measure. My reading is that this establishes useful analogue arithmetic, not digital-level numerical precision.
Alex: What sets that accuracy limit? Is it an unavoidable cost of doing arithmetic with light?
Sam: The authors identify calibration of the liquid-crystal device as the main factor. At the largest size, each entry occupies only a single grating period. The optical pattern then starts to distort, disrupting the constructive and destructive interference needed for accurate sums.
Alex: There’s also the problem of reading the answer. If recovering each output needs a slow measurement, fast optical propagation alone won’t establish a fast computer.
Sam: In this experiment, they scan a mirror and fit interference signals to recover amplitude and phase. They discuss single-shot measurement as an improvement. So the demonstrated arithmetic should not be confused with a demonstrated end-to-end speed advantage.
Alex: The discussion also projects strong energy efficiency. Should readers treat that as another experimental result?
Sam: No. It is an estimate based on assumed detectable optical power, optical efficiency, and projected throughput. It is not a measured energy budget for the full computing system. Likewise, the proposed neural-network and optimisation applications are motivations, not demonstrated application benchmarks.
Alex: Given those boundaries, who should read the full document, and where would you send them first?
Sam: Researchers designing optical processors or analogue accelerators should read it. Start with Methods, especially the signed-output measurement and calibration. Then read Results for the comparison between expected and measured answers as the calculation size increases.
Alex: And the Discussion is best read as a roadmap: what improved modulators and measurement could enable, rather than what the apparatus already achieved.
Sam: Yes. For everyone else, remember this: programmable light can perform signed arithmetic in parallel, but a working multiplier is not yet a competitive computer. This experiment strengthens the first claim; it leaves the system-level comparison open.
