This research investigates the individual differences—specifically gender, major, age, and English proficiency—that affect the Willingness to Communicate (WTC) of Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The study aims to provide insights for educators to foster a more participatory classroom environment by understanding why some learners are more hesitant to engage in oral interactions than others.
The researchers surveyed 860 Chinese university students using a 54-item WTC questionnaire, which measured participants' likelihood of communicating in various inside- and outside-class scenarios. The study utilized Bandura’s social learning theory as a theoretical framework, emphasizing the role of observational learning and cognitive processes in social interaction. Data were analyzed using independent-samples T-tests and ANOVA to identify statistically significant differences in WTC scores across the demographic and academic variables.
The data revealed that gender, major, and age are statistically significant predictors of WTC. Specifically, female students reported a higher WTC than their male peers. Additionally, students majoring in liberal arts demonstrated a greater willingness to communicate compared to those in scientific fields. Regarding age, students in the 19–21 age range exhibited higher WTC scores than those in the 22–24 group. Notably, the study found no statistically significant relationship between English proficiency levels and WTC, suggesting that reluctance to communicate is a universal challenge that persists regardless of a student's linguistic skill level.
Understanding these individual differences helps language instructors move beyond traditional, one-size-fits-all teaching methods. By recognizing that factors such as age and major influence a student's participation, teachers can create more supportive environments—such as fostering emotional intelligence and reducing anxiety—to encourage active engagement. The findings suggest that communication reluctance is not merely a linguistic problem but a multifaceted psychological and social one that requires targeted pedagogical strategies at all proficiency levels.
One of the most significant issues in the success of language students is communication skills. Due to the high importance of the willingness to communicate in foreign language learning, many researchers are looking for effective factors in raising the level of communication among language learners. Reviewing the literature, the researchers explored the role of language learners' gender, major, age, and proficiency level in their willingness to communicate. To gather the necessary data, the researcher administered a willingness to communicate questionnaire among 860 Chinese english as a foreign language (EFL) students. The results of data analyses demonstrated that gender, major, and age played a significant role in determining language learners' willingness to communicate. However, the findings showed that learners' willingness to communicate could be different in all proficiency levels. The results showed that taking into account factors such as students' gender, background, and age directly helps to improve the willingness to communicate among language learners. Finally, solutions to improve the willingness to communicate are provided.
Sam: It's the stated framework. Social learning theory says we learn by watching and imitating others, not only through reward. In my reading, though, the analysis doesn't test it. What they actually do is simpler. They give one questionnaire, then compare total scores across groups.
Alex: Then walk me through the questionnaire. If the measurement is shaky, nothing downstream matters much.
Sam: Students rate how willing they'd be to speak in many situations, inside and outside class. The scale runs from "almost never willing" to "almost always willing." The authors had it translated into Chinese by two bilingual translators. They back-translated it, had three experts check it, and piloted it on thirty people. The reliability they report is acceptable. Then they posted it online and shared a QR code through WeChat, the messaging platform. Students filled it in on their phones, in about eight minutes on average.
Alex: Sharing a QR code on WeChat sounds like recruiting whoever happens to be reachable. Who ended up in the sample?
Sam: You're right; it's a convenience sample, meaning whoever was reachable, not randomly selected. It spans universities and colleges in ten provinces, plus one autonomous region and two municipalities. But about three-quarters of respondents were women. Almost a third came from Anhui alone. A bit over half studied liberal arts, the rest sciences. English level came from university placement tests, sorted into primary, intermediate and advanced.
Alex: Let's get to the results. What did gender show, and what does the gap mean in practice?
Sam: Women scored higher. They averaged about six points above men. That's on a total scale that runs from 28 to 140. It was statistically significant. But the authors also report an effect size called eta squared. That's the share of score variation explained by group membership. Here it's about one percent. The authors themselves call it very small.
Alex: So knowing someone's gender tells you almost nothing about how willing they are to talk. Did major and age behave the same way?
Sam: Very similar. Liberal arts students scored about five and a half points above science students. Again it was significant, and again it explained about one percent. Age was a little messier. The nineteen-to-twenty-one group scored highest. But in the follow-up comparisons, only one gap held up. That's the middle group versus the oldest, twenty-two to twenty-four, a difference of about nine points. The youngest versus the middle group just missed significance.
Alex: And proficiency, which was the contested question in earlier work. What happened there?
Sam: No statistically significant difference across the three levels. Intermediate learners averaged slightly highest, but the spread could be chance. The authors read this as siding with the earlier no-difference study. They say learners at any level can be eager or reluctant to speak.
Alex: Here's my worry. Most respondents are women, and I'd guess many are in liberal arts. Couldn't the gender and major gaps be partly the same gap?
Sam: The paper can't answer that. Each factor was tested on its own, with separate t-tests and analyses of variance. Nothing models gender, major and age together. So the overlap you're describing stays an open possibility, not something the study rules in or out.
Alex: What's the limitation that matters most, then?
Sam: For me, it's the gap between evidence and conclusions. The design is a single snapshot comparing averages, and every effect is tiny. Yet the conclusion calls these factors crucial and considerable. The abstract goes further. It says taking gender, background and age into account directly helps improve willingness to communicate. Nothing like that was tested. The teaching advice is reasonable, such as giving learners more freedom and making them feel safe to speak. But it's recommendation, not result.
Alex: Anything in the reporting itself that would make a careful reader pause?
Sam: A few inconsistencies. The questionnaire is described as fifty-four items in one place and twenty-seven in another. Neither number fits the reported score range neatly. The age range is given as sixteen to twenty-two, but one comparison group is twenty-two to twenty-four. And English level is credited to placement tests in the methods. Yet the limitations section calls it self-reported. None of that overturns the main pattern. But it's worth checking before you cite specifics.
Alex: So who should actually sit down with the full paper, and where should they start?
Sam: Anyone researching willingness to communicate in Chinese or other East Asian classrooms. Start with the Results for gender and age, and read the effect-size sentences, not just the significance tests. Then read the questionnaire description in Methods, and try to settle which instrument and item count was used. The literature review is useful as a quick map of where proficiency findings conflict.
Alex: And for everyone else, the one thing to carry away?
Sam: Quiet learners turned up at every English level in this sample. Gender, major and age moved the scores only slightly.
Alex: A useful reminder that fluency and willingness to speak aren't the same thing.
