Family members remain the primary source of unpaid care for older adults in the United States, yet adult children do not automatically assume care when parental needs arise. Understanding how caregiving intentions form requires examining adults' motivational orientations, particularly the distinction between a generalized self-concept as a caregiver and relationship-specific beliefs about what one should do for one's aging parents. Prior research has often relied on retrospective accounts from current caregivers or used overlapping terms inconsistently. This study investigates whether a generalized caregiver role identity and a parent-specific felt obligation are empirically distinct motivational orientations, and it evaluates the underlying dimensional structure of parent-directed expectations and caregiving intentions.
The study utilized a cross-sectional, anonymous online survey administered via Qualtrics between April and July 2025. The final analytic sample comprised 219 adult participants (average age 47.6 years, approximately 80% female, and about 70% holding a post-graduate degree) who completed at least 95% of the survey regarding prospective caregiving for biological parents. The survey measured generalized caregiver role identity using adapted items from the Caregiver Role Identity Scale, parent-directed should expectations, felt obligation toward parents using an adapted Stein measure, and cultural-familial justifications for care.
Statistical analyses performed in Stata 19.5 proceeded in four stages: examining descriptive statistics and correlations, evaluating initial confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) measurement blocks using maximum likelihood with Satorra-Bentler correction, conducting exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on 22 parent-directed items via polychoric correlations and oblique rotation, and comparing alternative three- and four-domain theory-informed measurement models.
The initial confirmatory models revealed that five items designated as caregiving intentions and nine items designated as felt obligation failed to form separate unidimensional constructs. A two-factor model separating these proposed constructs showed virtually no improvement over a single-factor model, with the two factors correlating at .952, demonstrating a severe lack of discriminant validity. Consequently, structural regression models estimating their independent effects on caregiving intentions could not be interpreted.
In contrast, exploratory factor analysis of the parent-directed expectations supported a four-factor structure: Filial Care and Relational Regard, Cultural-Familial Justifications for Care, Practical and Emotional Support Expectations, and Relational Accommodation and Equity. Model comparisons showed that this four-domain model outperformed the alternative three-domain model by reducing both the AIC and BIC values, though absolute fit indices like CFI and TLI indicated that the structure should be viewed as a preliminary exploratory representation rather than a fully validated scale.
These findings challenge the common assumption in caregiving literature that general caregiver identity and relationship-specific obligation operate as distinct psychological drivers for adult children anticipating parental care. By demonstrating that these constructs heavily overlap empirically, the study highlights the need for more rigorous measurement development in prospective caregiving research. Researchers and practitioners must rethink how they operationalize adult children's motivations, as treating identity and obligation as separate factors may confound theoretical models of caregiving intentions.
