This section of the General Handbook outlines the structural framework for missionary service within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Missionary work is characterized as a sacred privilege and a priesthood responsibility for young men, while it remains an optional opportunity for young women. All missions are fundamentally based on the mission to witness of God and serve His children. The document provides clear distinctions between teaching missions, which focus on gospel proclamation away from home, and service missions, which focus on local community and Church-based assistance.
The handbook categorizes missionaries into four primary groups based on age, location, and assignment. Young teaching missionaries (ages 18–25 for men, 18–29 for women) typically serve for 18 to 24 months away from home. Service missionaries, who are assigned based on personal circumstances, serve locally while living at home. Senior missionaries (ages 40 and older) serve for variable durations, and senior service missionaries (ages 26 and older) are called by local stake presidents to provide specific functional assistance in Church operations or community organizations.
Prospective missionaries are required to meet specific standards of worthiness and spiritual preparation, including repentance for serious sins and a commitment to gospel living. Physical, mental, and emotional health are significant factors, and candidates undergo thorough assessment processes involving local ecclesiastical leaders. Financially, the Church operates on a principle of sacrifice, where families bear primary responsibility for funding, though the Church maintains mechanisms—such as the ward missionary fund—to ensure that eligible candidates are not prevented from serving due to financial hardship.
The text details the full life cycle of a missionary, from the initial recommendation process and the revelatory assignment phase to the concluding release interview. It addresses specific protocols for travel, medical coverage, the role of local leaders in supervision, and the process for early release. This provides a comprehensive operational guide for both potential candidates and the Church leadership tasked with supporting their service.
Sam: A customized schedule could sound like different eligibility standards. Does the handbook make that distinction?
Alex: It explicitly gives young service candidates the same preparation and worthiness standards as teaching candidates. Worthiness means meeting the Church’s religious standards for service. All young candidates are recommended through the same process, even though their assignments differ.
Sam: So duration alone would not tell us how alike two missions are. What durations does the guide actually specify?
Alex: Young men usually serve for twenty-four months. Young women usually serve for eighteen months. Those usual durations apply to both teaching and service assignments, but the living arrangements and daily demands differ.
Sam: The chapter also distinguishes senior missionaries from senior service missionaries. Are those interchangeable labels?
Alex: No. Senior missionaries usually serve away from home. Married couples may be called from age forty if they have no dependent children; eligible single members must have no minor children living at home. Senior service missionaries live at home, and members may be called from age twenty-six.
Sam: Let’s move to the recommendation itself. Where does the guide put the burden of deciding whether someone is ready?
Alex: It combines professional health assessments with interviews by local Church leaders. Every candidate must have medical professionals assess health readiness. The area office and Missionary Department review those assessments, and some recommendations may be returned with instructions for improving readiness.
Sam: That is broader than a spiritual interview. How are the local interviews organized?
Alex: The bishop, a local congregational leader, and the stake president, who oversees a group of congregations, first discuss health and finances. If those matters are in order, they discuss testimony and worthiness using the prescribed interview questions. They must not add eligibility standards or change those questions.
Sam: What happens when a candidate has a health challenge rather than simply meeting or missing a fixed threshold?
Alex: Leaders are told to counsel sensitively, and some candidates may need professional care. A candidate prescribed medication must commit to taking it as directed throughout service. Depending on health circumstances, leaders may discuss a service assignment.
Sam: And religious readiness is still a separate requirement. What does the chapter say about repentance?
Alex: It presents repentance and forgiveness as gifts through Jesus Christ. A candidate must have repented of serious sin before the recommendation is submitted. The process includes enough time to demonstrate repentance through righteous living; the excerpt gives no universal waiting period.
Sam: For someone planning school or employment around service, when can the recommendation process reach submission?
Alex: A young candidate’s recommendation may be submitted up to one hundred fifty days before availability. For a senior candidate, the window is up to nine months. Availability must satisfy age, Church membership, and, where applicable, school-completion requirements.
Sam: Finances seem like another possible barrier. Does the handbook treat inability to pay as a reason to delay a prepared young person?
Alex: It says a young person who desires to serve and has prepared according to their ability should not be delayed for financial reasons. Missionaries and families have primary responsibility for contributions. If need remains, leaders may ask ward or stake members to contribute to the ward missionary fund.
Sam: But those funds do not cover every form of service. What distinction should families understand?
Alex: The ward missionary fund supports ward members serving away from home, not service missionaries. Missionaries serving at home are responsible for their financial needs, with possible help from family and friends. Senior missionaries away from home also cover expenses beyond their housing and vehicle contribution.
Sam: Once a young service missionary begins, who supervises the work? Living at home could involve several overlapping authorities.
Alex: The service location provides training and supervision. Service missionary advisers support duties, schedules, assignments, and health. The mission president directs the mission’s spiritual and behavioral expectations, while the stake president handles ecclesiastical matters, including personal worthiness.
Sam: So the guide separates operational support from religious oversight. Does the call-versus-assignment distinction also carry through the formal authorization?
Alex: Yes. “Setting apart” is a priesthood act authorizing missionary service, accompanied by a blessing. It applies to the call, not a specific assignment, so reassignment does not require repeating it. Release followed by an approved return to service does.
Sam: How much should a researcher trust this account of the system? It specifies responsibilities, but does it show how consistently they are carried out?
Alex: It is a primary source for prescribed responsibilities, not evidence of consistent implementation. There is no study sample, outcome comparison, or effectiveness estimate here. And this is an excerpt: omitted passages and referenced resources limit how complete our account can be.
Sam: One consequential test of those responsibilities is what happens when service ends early. What support does the handbook prescribe?
Alex: Bishops and stake presidents should give special support to missionaries released early for health, worthiness, or other reasons. They help with recovery or possible return to service. If returning is not possible, they encourage lifelong discipleship and other endeavors, including education or employment.
Sam: Who should read the full chapter, and where should they begin?
Alex: Candidates, families, and leaders should begin with preparation and the recommendation process, then check finances and supervision for their assignment. Researchers studying institutional authority should start with call versus assignment and follow who makes each decision. Read this as a rulebook, not an evaluation.
Sam: And what should everyone else remember?
Alex: A shared call to serve does not mean an identical assignment, schedule, or support structure.
Sam: Thanks for listening.
