CRAFT: Exploring Wearable Creative AI on Smart Glasses for Fiction Writing in Real-World Contexts

Fiction writers frequently draw inspiration from their daily surroundings, yet they often struggle to capture the nuance of these moments due to the cognitive load of transforming real-world observations into fictional narratives. Traditional tools like voice memos or notes often fail to preserve the atmospheric richness of an experience. The CRAFT (Context-aware Reality-Fiction Transformation) approach explores how AI-integrated smart glasses can serve as a creative partner, allowing writers to observe, ideate, and transform reality into fiction in real-time.

The researchers employed a three-stage methodology: first, interviewing nine writers to define the core needs of creative practice; second, conducting co-design workshops with 16 participants to develop interaction mechanisms; and third, deploying a technology probe in field trials with eight writers to evaluate the system's utility in real-world settings.

The study identified three primary design goals for wearable creative AI: augmenting in-situ perception to bridge the gap between reality and fiction, maintaining the 'authenticity triad' (factual, logical, and emotional truth), and preserving the writer's creative agency. Participants reported that the system helped them overcome 'memory fade' by allowing for immediate, micro-creation sessions while on the go. The ability to receive proactive, context-aware suggestions based on the environment allowed writers to maintain immersion in both the physical world and their evolving story worlds, effectively turning serendipitous encounters into narrative material.

This research provides a framework for moving creative writing beyond the stationary desk environment. By demonstrating how wearable AI can support the 'observe-suggest-express-transform' loop, the study offers a blueprint for future ubiquitous creative tools. It highlights that successful human-AI collaboration in creative domains requires more than just text generation; it requires systems that respect the writer's need for agency, emotional resonance, and the delicate balance between lived reality and artistic fiction.
